The Volksbund (Volksbund), which is financed to almost two thirds by donations, now looks after 832 war graves in 46 states, with around 2. 8 million war deaths. With the construction and maintenance of the cemeteries, it preserves the memory of the war dead. The huge burial fields remind the living of the past and confront them with the consequences of war and violence.
As the only war grave service in the world, it operates its own school and extracurricular youth work as well as its own youth meeting and educational centres.
